WHO issues global guideline on the use of GLP-1 medicines in treating obesity
To address the growing global health challenge of obesity, which affects more than 1 billion people, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first guideline on the use of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapies for treating obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease.
ICPO welcomes this launch of the global guidelines and really hope to see this will also help address stigma for people living with obesity.
These medications are needed for the long term treatment and management of obesity but can also help prevent other non communicable diseases such as type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease.
We hope these guidelines help raise awareness that these medications should be used under the right supervision and guidance of healthcare professionals.
